Minutes for
February 13, 2008
- The 8:30 am Parent Guild Meeting was
cancelled due to a snowstorm causing a delayed opening of school.
- The focus of the 7:00 pm Parent Guild
Meeting was to address the current parking problems experienced by those
parents dropping off and picking up their children at SMA. Following is
a brief summary of the discussion. More information will follow as this
problem is addressed.
- Rich Benevento, a Traffic Engineer
involved in many Parking Studies, was present at the meeting to discuss
the problem. He was involved in the original parking plan constructed
for the school in 2004. Only the “am” portion of the 2004 recommendation
was implemented. Due to the current afternoon pick-up problems, there
was discussion surrounding the implementation of the 2004 “pm”
recommendations.
- The primary concern of any parking plan
should always revolve around the issue of SAFETY! Just a few parents not
following the rules can disrupt the success of the plan. Diagrams
showing the traffic flow required at peak drop-off and pick-up times can
be found in the front office of the school.
- The morning drop-off is going fairly
well. The school will be attempting to re-educate parents about the
proper procedures. This may be especially important for new families who
may not be aware of some of the drop-off traffic requirements.
- The problems surrounding the afternoon
pick-up procedures will be addressed. There will be changes coming to
improve the process. The first step is to get a “count” of the numbers
of cars involved in pick-up on any given day. Look for upcoming
communication regarding a change in the afternoon pick-up, possibly
beginning after April school vacation. All changes need to be viewed as
intended to increase the SAFETY of our children at dismissal.
- The next Parent Guild meeting will be
March 12th.
